画(かく)Kaku - Japanese OCR Dictionary ALPHA VERSION

Kaku: 画 (かく) - stroke (of a kanji, etc.)

App requirements:

  • Android 5.0
  • "Draw over other apps" permission
  • "Fast enough" device

Installation instructions:

  1. Install the application - do not attempt to launch the application, it will crash
  2. Unzip the file from fuwafuwa.ca and put it into your phone's storage
  3. Move everything from the extracted zip to /Android/data/ca.fuwafuwa.kaku
  4. Go to your phone's settings and find the setting "Draw over other apps" - enable that setting for Kaku (where the setting is depends on Android version, so you may have to Google this)
  5. Launch Kaku and hopefully it should work - double tap to OCR

Note: The handwriting keyboard for manual corrections is currently hard-coded to Google Handwriting keyboard

For step 3, the directory structure on Android should look like: /Android/data/ca.fuwafuwa.kaku | -> /files | -> /screenshots | -> /tessdata | -> KanjiDict2.db | -> OrmLiteJmDict.db

Dream app !

Allows almost immediate translation of every japanese text apearing on the phone, even unselectable and uncopyable text. Great for games or apps that don't allow text copying.

Kaku still needs some improvements, for example it doesn't deinflect conjugated verbs yet, and the characters can't be copied from the app, but still it's an ubelievably useful tool. It's a work in progress, and the developper needs cheering !
